Aims: To determine the possible growth of Candida albicans, colony morphology and microscopic morphology in terms of the presence of germ tube using Pigeon pea agar with different concentrations of extract.

Study Design: Experimental method was used by the researchers.

Place and Duration of the Study: Microbiology-Parasitology Department of University of Perpetual Help System Binan-Dr. Jose G. Tamayo Medical University from May 2018 to November 2018.

 Methodology: Three concentration of pigeon pea extract were done for the preparation of pigeon pea agar 50%, 30% and 20% concentration of extract was prepared. Sabouraud dextrose agar was also prepared. Candida albicans was inoculated in the Sabouraud dextrose agar and it served as the positive control for experiment. The organism was inoculated at 37 degrees celsius for 24 hours to 72 hours. After incubation, the growth in each plate was observed and aso the colony morphology. An aliquot 0.5 ml (12 drops) of serum or media was prepared in a test tube for the determination of the presence of germ tube.

Results: The three concentrations used in the experiment were able to show a positive growth of Candida albicans. The colony morphology in each concentration was the same with Sabouraud Dextrose agar that served as the positive control for the experiment. The colony morphology shows creamy to white, circular, smooth and raised colonies. Germ tube was also seen which is necessary for identification of Candida Albicans.

Conclusion: Furthermore, based on the study conducted, Pigeon pea agar can be used as an alternative agar for isolation of Candida albicans. It shows that pigeon pea has all those components in order to support the growth of the organism.
