The study aimed to compare the effects of twice-a-day intake of bamboo root decoction, ginger root tea, and once-a-day intake of hydrochlorothiazide among hypertensive individuals in Municipality of Alicia, Province of Zamboanga Sibugay. The outcome parameters measured includes the mean arterial pressure, the mean heart rate, and the clinical symptoms. The study was a Comparative-Experimental Design utilizing Block Randomization and Open Clinical Trial. A total of 87 respondents completed the study. The respondents were hypertensive individuals under Stage I Hypertension JNC 7, not on antihypertensive drug therapy, with no associated co morbidities, 20 years old and above, and no intentions of leaving the community. The study was conducted in 5 Phases namely, Baseline Month Phase, 1st Treatment Month (Bamboo Phase and Ginger Phase), 1st Washout Month Phase, 2nd Treatment Month (Hydrochlorothiazide Phase), and 2nd Washout Month Phase. Each Phase was conducted daily for 4 weeks except for Baseline month Phase for only 2 weeks with a total of 18 weeks period of study. The Baseline Month Phase consists of twice-a-day monitoring of blood pressure, heart rate, and clinical symptoms, 1st Treatment month (Bamboo Phase and Ginger Phase) consists of twice-a-day intake of 250 ml of bamboo root decoction and 150 ml of ginger root tea with twice-a-day monitoring of blood pressure, heart rate, and clinical symptoms, the 1st Washout Phase consists of twice-a- day monitoring of blood pressure, heart rate, and clinical symptoms, 2nd Treatment Month (Hydrochlorothiazide Phase) consists of oncea- day intake of 25 mg Hydrochlorothiazide tablet with twice-a-day monitoring of blood pressure, heart rate, and clinical symptoms, and 2nd Washout Phase consists of twice-aday monitoring of blood pressure, heart rate, and clinical symptoms. The preparations and dosages of bamboo root decoction and ginger root tea were based from previous researchers, Cuevas (2009) and Aming (2006), respectively. The mean arterial pressure, mean heart rate, and clinical symptoms attributed to hypertension were analyzed utilizing Measures of Central tendency, T- tests and Repeated-Measure ANOVA to determine the level of significance. The results of 18 weeks period of study showed that the twice-a-day intake of bamboo root decoction and ginger root tea had no significant effects on the mean heart rate and on the clinical symptoms attributed to hypertension. However, the
twice-a-day intake of bamboo root decoction and ginger root tea had significant effects on the mean arterial pressure, and both were as effective as the recommended and synthetically produced Hydrochlorothiazide tablet. Therefore, the twice-a-day intake of 250 ml bamboo root decoction and 150 ml of ginger root tea can serve as alternative medications to the synthetic and chemically produced once-a-day intake of 25 mg Hydrochlorothiazide tablet in the treatment of Stage I Hypertension JNC 7.
