This study was conducted to determine the effect of Self Instruction Manual on the compliance of mothers, as caretakers, in the management of children diagnosed with pneumonia in Barangay Poblacion, Municipality of Lakewood. Zamboanga del Sur. The Self Instruction Manual depicted correct medication, dosage, frequency and duration of drug therapy, proper medication storage, recommended intake of fluid, and when to follow up. It provided standard means for health workers in giving structured instructions for home management of childhood pneumonia to the mother of the patient. This is an interventional study aimed to improve the mother's adherence to the health officer's advice in the care of their sick child with pneumonia. A total of 64 respondents were selected through convenience sampling in the study during the month of September to December 2011. Before data gathering, the medical health officer and public health nurses were reviewed on how to manage childhood pneumonia according to the 2008 DOH IMCI guide, and oriented the nurses with the self instruction manual. Compliance to health care management of the respondents was assessed with the questionnaire-checklist done after three days during follow-up visit at the health center, and during home visit to those who failed to come back for follow-up using the same research instrument. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the outcome of the study. Results showed a high compliance rate among respondents, with 42 mothers (66%) of the 64 total number of mothers as primary caretakers. Therefore, the findings of this study points that usage of self instruction manual by mothers of children with pneumonia produced increased number of compliant mothers and has improved their practices in the home management of childhood pneumonia.
