This study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of Clinical Instruction Guide versus Self Instruction Manual on the compliance among mothers of children with pneumonia, ages 5 years and below, in selected barangays of Diplahan Municipality. The Clinical Instruction Guide is a simple pamphlet with patient profile, diagnosis, prescribed treatment, and some home instruction with corresponding clipart while the Self Instruction Manual is also a pamphlet that is more comprehensive than the former. It contains Patient profile, diagnosis, prescribed treat, home instruction with corresponding actual picture that can be easily understood by the mothers. Also one of its component is a calendar with the marked date of consult and date of follow-up. This study utilized quasi-experimental design, respondents were assigned to two groups, one group given Clinical Instruction Guide and the other one with Self Instruction Manual. A convenient sampling method was used to gather the respondents. There were a total of 40 respondents for Clinical Instruction Guide and 48 Respondents for Self Instruction Manual. Prior to intervention, demographic data of identified respondents who qualified for inclusion criteria were assessed. Compliance of the mothers were assessed 3 days after the consultation, this was also the date of follow-up which was based on IMCI-ARI protocol, the tool used was a 6 items checklist adopted from the study of Absara. Self Instruction Manual has a result of 64.6% compliance rate while Clinical Instruction Guide has 62.5% compliance rate. Using Chi-Square, at p value of 0.05, there is no significant difference of the effectiveness of both tools in improving compliance of mothers. Hence the two tools were comparable to each other.
