It is the major objectives of this study to investigate the genetic background of chronic schizoprenia and bipolar disorder among Filipino patients. Specifically, this research aims to compare patients with locus-specific relative risk of either of the two illnesses with control individuals.

Schizophrenia and binolar disorder are commonly encountered in Psychiatric clinics in the Philippines. Information regarding the aspects of these two life-long, and often debilitating, conditions have not been reported. DNA isolated from the subjects whole blood samples will be used for genotyping and polymorphic markers derived from specific segments of positional candidates is unrelated patients and controls. Statistical evaluation for significance of the frequency scores of each allele of the gene/s under the study will be done. Databases for comparison of the genetic pattern of the susceptible chromosomal regions for chronic schizophrenia and bipolar disorder may be used for further investigation.
